Where is the return to Agriculture?

Last night I was watching an interesting program on the national geographic channel where a guy travels around exploring the 4 corners of Spain. Just before I switched it off to go to sleep he traveled to a region in northern Spain which is famous for its shepherds. In the program he mentions the fact that in the last 50 years the number of shepherds in the area has decreased from as many as 5,000 to as few as 15.

Now I am not saying this will solve all problems nor am I saying that this is the only option buuuuut...
For a nation that is nearing bankruptcy, has one of the highest unemployment rates in Europe, and is struggling to survive... uhh why not return to agriculture people? I know the work is hard, I know it doesn't pay much. But it does pay, and you are nearly guaranteed sustainability as you are providing yourself with your own product, and lets not forget tax breaks! Its only common sense for people to return to trade jobs or skill based employment. One of the main reasons Germany has been kept afloat is largely due to their trade skills and apprenticeship culture.

When I see a old shepherd lamenting the loss of  a dying trade I can't help but lament as well the loss of a culture that feels it necessary to work for a living and not just be entitled to privilege.

I'm sure some of the same things could be said for Greece, Portugal, Ireland, and Italy...
