Yesterday was a tough day for me. Among other things it was my moms birthday, one of many constant reminders that my family is so very far away. The toughest times to live far away from your family is during the first and last months as well as major holidays or birthdays. It was just sinking in that I have an entire year ahead of me before I will be back in the United States. That can be a tough pill to swallow at times. Difficulties with Indonesian culture and the lack of some basic comforts exacerbate these feelings.
I have a holiday coming up at the end of next week which will be nice. Unfortunately though it is due to the Lebaran holiday which is the mass exodus from Jakarta. Simply meaning that any attempt to leave Jakarta will result in extreme transit costs and massively overpriced hotels. If you don't book your tickets 3-6 months in advance you simply can't find a good deal. Which means that once again I will be staying in Jakarta for the Lebaran holiday...The streets will be empty, the stores will be closed, and my friends will all be working.
