Week one... sudah

I'm just about finished with the first week of school. Normally I won't have any classes on Fridays and will instead be a day to prepare and to grade but today I substituted for the high school humanities teachers. I was asked to give my lecture on note taking and proper methods for the retention of knowledge. I was a little nervous as I had to speak to a much larger group of students and I also needed to use a microphone as I was being recorded. Thankfully though, note taking in a proper manner is a skill that I developed over many years at FCS so I am able to expound abundantly about it and its merits.

I am very much looking forward to my new schedule as I now have weekends off! That means for the first time since I have been to Indonesia I have more than one day off in a row. A split weekend has its benefits as it breaks up the week but when you go longs stretches without a holiday it can be exhausting. You never feel completely rested and worst of all you are not able to go anywhere. I am looking forward to the option of going to the thousand islands or Singapore just to get away.

In two weeks to the day I will be back on holiday and as of right now I am planning on going to Jogjakarta the former capital of Indonesia. It is in roughly the middle of the island of Java or about 7 hours away by train. Its most famous for its world heritage sites. The Buddhist temple Borobudur and the Hindu temple Prambanan. Both of which are stunning in both detail and scale. It will also be interesting to see a different part of Indonesia and of course as always to get out of this sprawling mess called Jakarta.

Last night a large group of friends and I celebrated one of my best friends birthdays at Jakarta's best known Mexican restaurant. I was assured that it was as close to authentic as it gets. I did my best to put on a brave face but it was sub par bordering on pathetic. It would be one of the many mexican restaurants in my home town that would last at best a few weeks before closing. It wasn't bad but it most certainly was not good.
