Riots in Jakarta

Things are a little crazy in the city right now. School was canceled yesterday, we are being sent home early today, and may cancel again tomorrow due to what are called Demo's. In other words protests. Adek Berry / AFP / Getty Images

I was told not to even leave my apartment because as a foreigner I may be targeted Chinese are also at risk. The reason for the protests is due to the Government raising fuel prices by 30%. They are signing the papers to confirm this tomorrow so things might get crazy tomorrow. The fact that Indonesia almost imploded in 1998 and the entire city of Jakarta became one giant riot scene has everyone on edge.

All that being said, I am in no way shape or form worried. Jakarta is an enormous city and 99% of these protests take place around the home of the president or near GI. I am nowhere near there nor will I go there. Most of the Demo's yesterday were peaceful... but the media will have you believe society is collapsing as we speak.

I went to the movies yesterday and it was great, the roads were empty! Most people are staying home waiting to see how things turn out.

One negative side to all this is that all the local Mosques are blasting advice to everyone all day so I was awoken this morning at 4am to the loudest call to prayer I have ever heard. My cups and plates were actually rattling on the shelves it was so loud. Needless to say I am exhausted already... I have a full day of classes to get through, then meetings, then a pool competition tonight. Going to be a long day..
